Dani, Chels and Joco do Italy - Day 7 - Napoli/Pompei

If I can tell you one truth about Italy, that I feel will always be true, and that I feel can be counted on regardless of season, it is this: Naples is a craphole. An utter craphole. We arrived at our hostel in style, via a cab driver who drove up the median, in the opposite lane, and weaved dangerously close to accidents the entire ride, blasting what I'm sure had to be his own DJ-mash ups of artists like Elton John mashed with Tupac. We climbed the six-flights of stairs to our hostel, as the elevators were looking a bit suspect and then asked the man what we should accomplish today - should we go to the islands, or to Pompei? Will we have enough time to do Naples/Pompei and the islands? The answer was yes to all of the above. We should do all of it, and a lot as much or as little time as we please to each one. Perfect, thank you.
We decided the main thing we wanted to do in the area was to go see the Pompei ruins, so we hopped a bus to Pompei and toured the ruins. Turns out it was Italian culture week, so the tour was free. Wicked. It was raining and miserable, but we were touring what was basically a gravesite, so it kind of fit.

After much searching through the ruins, we found the preserved bodies (the reason for the visit, really). So wild. Wild to think they are just as whole as they are. Then suddenly, as you stare at them and snap pictures you have the thought of, 'I'm looking at dead bodies'. It gives you the shivers.

Amazingly well preserved city

We left the ruins and entered the sketchy town of Pompei. There is quite literally nothing else in Pompei. We had some pizza (of course) and headed back to the bus stop to wait for our bus to come. This is where the story gets good. Sitting on a stoop across from a campground, waiting for the bus we noted that we were getting a lot of attention from passing cars. I made a joke about how they probably think we are hookers, ha, ha. Turns out I was right!
The next thing we know two heinous looking Italian women in too much makeup and massive boots came out on the stoop next to us. Suddenly, without even knowing what hit us we were watching a real-live prostitute pick up. I kid you not. The women were blowing kisses and making sex faces at the cars. A car would pull over. We watched the negotiation happen, then the girl get in. 10-15 minutes later the girl was returned to her stoop. How foul. How utterly foul. Blugh. And the people really did think we were hookers, which is way worse.
When this was all going down and a bus still hadn't come we opted to take the train back to Naples. We hopped on the world's most graffiti-ed train and were greeted by several foul young men banging on the windows of the train car and trying their hardest to talk to us in English (fortunately they knew about 3 words, one of which was "Hi", so conversation was limited). Feeling rained on, disgusted and like we were in some kind of imminent danger we opted to cab back to our hostel instead of walk, lock the door and just be safe inside.
Naples is a craphole. I cannot stress it enough.
