Guy Fawkes attempted to bomb the Parliament buildings in 1605 and was caught and tortured. In his honour, every November 5th the people of England burn his effigy *and the effigies of other notable celebs like Wayne Rooney* in a massive bonfire display that is followed by the most exquisite fireworks display I have ever seen! It went on for a full half-hour, and was just generally amazing (and we went to the one in Dartford, I can only imagine what the proper London one was like - must have been out of control!).
